Field Report from Trimithis in Roman Dakhla: The 2023-2026 Seasons
Abstract
Ancient Trimithis (modern Amheida) in Egypt’s Dakhla Oasis has been the site of active excavation since 2004. While the settlement dates back to the Old Kingdom, excavations have inevitably focused on its last significant phase of occupation in the Roman period. The last two decades have yielded important insights into the religion, economy, and culture of this town at the edge of the Roman Empire. Following a brief overview of the site and major discoveries (notably, the temple of Thoth, the House of Serenos, the Roman thermae, and an ancient school room), this presentation will focus on the work of the most recent seasons, 2023-2026, which have seen the excavation of a fourth-century funerary church, a large domestic structure with an impressive decorative program, and the exploration of an area on the western limit of the archaeological area that suggests high-level urban planning.
