Title: Tell el-Burak (South Lebanon) in the Iron Age: New Light on Phoenician Religion and Economy

Abstract: Tell el-Burak is located on the shore of Addousiyye, a village between Sidon and Sarafand, ancient Sarepta. It has been excavated by a joint Lebanese-German team since 2001. Historically, the site belonged to the territory of the Bronze and Iron Age Sidonian kingdom. The paper will present the main finds exposed during the excavations of the last two decades: the Middle Bronze Age palace (early 19thc.-end of 18th c. BCE)  with its wall paintings which display strong Egyptian influence, and the Iron Age remains (8th-4th c. BCE) which indicate that the site was dedicated to the production and storage of agricultural goods, mainly wine as attested by the presence of a large winepress. The exposed buildings allow an insight into the ancient history of the Sidonian kingdom and shed new light on Phoenician economy, architecture and religion. Tell el-Burak substantially contributes to a better understanding of the Phoenician culture in the homeland.
