Hagiographic and Archaeological Narratives in Early Christian Cyprus

Abstract
Cyprus holds a central role in the Christianization of the Eastern Mediterranean basin. Our knowledge of its cultural transition between paganism and Christianity relies heavily on the available textual sources, primarily of hagiographic nature, and increasingly on the archaeological record and the study of the art and architecture of the period. Of particular interest is the contrast between the hagiographic and the archaeological sources regarding the growth and expansion of the religion in the island and the formation of Christian communities until the 4th century. This talk will revisit aspects of the contradicting evidence in an attempt to better understand the complex networks of religious co-existence and conversion in Early Christian Cyprus.
